4 Ways to Incorporate MCAT Prep into your Daily Routine

4 Ways to Incorporate MCAT Prep into your Daily Routine For the majority of students, MCAT prep requires hundreds of hours of dedicated review. Often, this study occurs over several months. In addition to lengthy review sessions and practice tests, studying material in short snippets throughout the day can help pre-medical students fortify conceptual understanding and memorize key facts. Thus, incorporating MCAT prep into your daily routine can be a valuable strategy. Below are four ways to incorporate MCAT prep into your daily routine. Create a set of high-yield MCAT flashcards and review them every night Though the MCAT is largely rooted in understanding fundamental principles and problem-solving, there are always concepts, facts, and formulas that students must memorize to do well on the exam(e.g. endocrine pathways). When you are initially examining your review material, develop flashcards about these topics. Keep these flashcards on your nightstand and run through them each night before you sleep to easily incorporate MCAT prep into your routine. Add to your stack as you encounter additional information you must memorize, and before you realize it, you will have a better foundation in all the material you once had a difficult time recalling. Read notes while you exercise Though workouts can be an excellent way to unwind from the stresses of studying, certain parts of your exercise routine are great opportunities for you to read and absorb information. Consider adding elliptical or stationary bike time onto the end of each of your workouts, and then review prepared notes during that time. If you exercise multiple times per week, this study time can mount quickly and assist you in sorting through a number of topics. Talk through MCAT topics with your peers during a meal Studying for months for the MCAT can become a very isolating experience. To combat this and reinforce your review process, try to schedule a daily meal with those friends who are also studying for the MCAT. Use this meal to discuss a different topic each day, like the gastrointestinal system or chemical equilibrium. You will gain from their perspective, solidify concepts, and enjoy the company. Take advantage of audio learning There are several commercial products available that narrate MCAT concepts and facts in detail to students. Adding these products to your regular review can strengthen your understanding of material while driving, flying, walking to classes, working out, or doing anything else that allows you to have your headphones on or access to speakers. Though this is a passive method of learning, information you glean from audio learning is a bonus, as the alternative would have been not reviewing at those times. Incorporating MCAT prep into your daily routine may seem trivial at first. After all, most people often feel that nothing substantial can be accomplished in several minutes. However, over the course of months, those small moments become hours of review and study that you otherwise would not have had. This, in turn, can translate to large increases in your score, or perhaps a bump of one or two points. However, those one or two points could be the ultimate difference in your medical schoolapplication.

Picking a Major Early in College

Picking a Major Early in College Time and time again, people may tell you not to stress over deciding on a major right away. They generally advise you to take your time contemplating, that you can change it at any time so there should be no pressure at all. While all of this may be true in a sense, the difficulty of adapting your curriculum to a major switch cannot be underestimated but it often is. People are quick to glamorize the freedom of being able to change your mind regarding your career path at any time in college, but the truth is, you can only change your mind so many times before it significantly lengthens your college career. With every major comes a different set of required classes, and depending on how closely related your new major and past major are, these classes may not always overlap. So if youre going into junior year and decide you want to be a marketing major when you have spent the last two years taking journalism classes, being able to fit your new batch of requirements in the four remaining semesters ahead of you may seem a bit daunting. All in all, it really does depend on the specific majors in question, because many students do change their minds late in the game and still manage to graduate on time or close to on time. The particular major could be less demanding in its requirements, you could get lucky in class requirements overlapping, or maybe youre just dedicated enough to cram an overload of hours into each semester you have left. So this idea is not impossible and you should never be discouraged to change your mind if you really feel passionate about a different career after all, that is whats most important in the end, doing something that you love. But you could make things a heck of a lot easier on yourself if you take just a few steps to really think things through during your first few semesters of school. First off, your freshman year will be filled with mostly Gen Eds anyway, so this is the safest time to flip from major to major. You wont be wasting any time because you need these Gen Eds regardless of what degree you walk away with later on. And while youre being forced to take all of this general education, really try to soak it up. Its good to be kept well-rounded because you experience more, and the more you learn about basic subjects, the more you will figure out what youre really interested in. The subjects you find yourself better at or caring about more may point you in the general direction of a more specific area of study that suits you well. This year should be spent truly exploring what the academic world has to offer you so you can discover what topics really matter to you. By the time sophomore year rolls around, you should hopefully have a good idea of what you want to study. If you do, start getting involved in all aspects of it! If youre still undecided, at least narrow down the main choices youre considering and try to take at least one class in each of them. This way, youre still allowing yourself to learn and explore rather than blindly settling down and youre decreasing any possibly wasted time. Also, if youre still struggling at this point, talk to other students in those majors, join extracurricular activities related to them, meet with your universitys Career Center. There are endless resources on college campuses ready to give you an honest perspective on making this big decision. Ideally, if you follow through on this process thoughtfully, you should be settled on a major by the end of your sophomore year and will have already made some progress toward completing its requirements. Again, if your career passions change overnight, you need to do what makes you happy. But by setting goals for yourself to figure out what you want early on, you will be able to devote a lot more time to it throughout your college career and be ten times more prepared to make it a professional reality once you graduate.

English Conversation Classes Language Learning and Children

English Conversation Classes Language Learning and Children I have to admit, the topic of this TED Talk bothered me at first. Patricia Kuhl, in her TED Talk about language learning in infants, seems to say that if you havent started learning a language before you are one year old, you might as well give up. Ive heard many people repeat this as a scientific fact, and I think its the reason a lot of people dont even try to learn a language. It certainly irritates me as someone who is trying to learn Spanish as an adult, and teaching English classes to adults.I have personally met people who have begun learning a language later in life, and have become so fluent that native speakers of the language can barely detect their accent. Kuhls talk caused the same reaction in comments on the TED website. But I dont think Kuhls main point was to make us adult language learners feel like our task is impossible. Rather, she wanted to show us the amazing abilities of the infant mind, and wonder out loud what we might someday learn from them. Why should you li sten to Patricia Kuhl:Patricia Kuhl is co-director of the Institute for Brain and Learning Sciences at the University of Washington. Shes internationally recognized for her research on early language and brain development, and studies that show how young children learn. Kuhl’s work has played a major role in demonstrating how early exposure to language alters the brain. It has implications for critical periods in development, for bilingual education and reading readiness, for developmental disabilities involving language, and for research on computer understanding of speech.Below is the video of Kuhls TED Talk. If you like, you can watch the video and then take an English Conversation Class about it. We also offer English classes for children. What question does Kuhl use the Koro language to represent? What are the best ages, according to Kuhl, for learning a language? What special thing can babies do with sound?Because of this, what does Kuhl call babies? How long does this p eriod last? What does Kuhl say babies are doing when they listen to people talk? What experiment did they do with the babies and Mandarin? What was the result? What does Kuhl hope her experiments will show us?Do believe that it is possible to become fluent in a language as an adult?

SAT Tip of the Week Know When the Author is Speaking

SAT Tip of the Week Know When the Author is Speaking Welcome to AJ Tutorings SAT Tip of the Week blog series!   Well be doling out behind-the-scenes tips and tricks from veteran test-takers to get you the best SAT score possible.Todays tip focuses on the critical reading section of the SAT.   Critical reading is typically seen as the most difficult score to improve on the SAT.   Your critical reading score, based on vocab and reading comprehension, is for the most part resistant to quick fixes.  In order to maximize your score on reading comprehension, you must do one thing well: understand the passage authors main argument. The corollary to understanding the authors main argument is understanding what is NOT the authors argument.  Difficult reading comprehension passages often present multiple viewpoints, all delivered in the authors voice.  Its your job as the reader to distinguish between when the author is stating his argument and when hes just describing the other sides position.Heres an excerpt from a passage in the College Boa rds Official SAT Study Guide:As a scientist, I find that only one vision of the city really gets my hackles upthe notion that a city is somehow unnatural, a blemish on the face of nature. The argument goes like this: Cities remove human beings from their natural place in the world. They are a manifestation of the urge to conquer nature rather than live in harmony with it. Therefore, we should abandon both our cities and our technologies and return to an earlier, happier state of existence, one that presumably would include many fewer human beings than now inhabit our planet. Now, its clear from the first paragraph that the author believes that cities are a part of nature (a viewpoint hell expand upon later in the passage).  But if you, the reader, are reading too quickly, you might skim the second paragraph and think that the author believes we should abandon  our cities, because they are unnatural.  After all, the author affirmatively states: Cities remove human beings from their natural place in the world.  Many students who arent reading attentively come away from this passage feeling very confused they think the author somehow believes cities are both part of nature and at odds with nature. The careful reader, on the other hand, will note that in the second paragraph, the author is presenting the opposing sides view, the vision of the city that gets his hackles up.  The careful reader reads slowly and methodically, and distinguishes between the authors argument and the opposing sides viewpoint. You can bet that the folks who develop SAT reading comp passages are aware that students will misunderstand the second paragraph.  In fact, one of the questions in this passage directly refers to that paragraph, and its a question that students often get wrong.  Read carefully, and you can be one of a small number of students who get this one right!SAT Tip #1: On tough reading comprehension passages, make sure you know when the author is speaking and when hes p resenting the other sides argument.

The New 13th Zodiac Constellation Did your Horoscope just Change

The New 13th Zodiac Constellation Did your Horoscope just Change Tell me about the new 13th zodiac constellation, shouted my 8 year old student Miles when I was teaching astronomy to him. For the record, Ive studied astrophysics (for only 6 month though) and hosted planetarium shows in Santa Barbara. Since that time I have been tutoring astronomy to docents of students all over California. Now you can imagine how stunned I was when Miles asked me about the new 13th zodiac constellation and I couldnt answer the question. To avoid you the troubles of a similar  mute response I am addressing all my fellow astronomy tutors in California in this article about the 13th constellation. The new 13th constellation is called Ophiuchus. It is situated between Sagittarius the archer and Scorpius the scorpion. Time wise, the Ophiuchus starts at the end of November (November 29th to be precise) and ends on December 17. The astrological  notion of the zodiac constellations (Cancer, Leo, Virgo, etc) dates back to the ancient Babylonians. They introduced the system of 12 zodiac constellations in accordance with their 12-month calendar. But the ancient Babylonian astronomers ignored the fact that the sun moves through 13 constellations, and not just 12. In our time, the astronomers at NASA decided to correct the Babylonians mistake and to include the missing 13th constellation the Ophiuchus. Whether the astrologers will adopt the new zodiac system remains to be seen. But to we scientist and teachers should know about Ophiuchus. For those who enjoy reading their horoscopes they might have to look it up under a different symbol now. Here are is the list of the corrected 13 zodiacs signs and their dates. Capricorn the sea goat January 20 February 16 Aquarius the water-bearer February 16 March 11 Pisces the fish March 11 April 18 Aries the ram April 18 May 13 Taurus the bull May 13 June 21 Gemini the twins June 21 July 20 Cancer the crab July 20 August 10 Leo the lion August 10 September 16 Virgo the virgin September 16 October 14 Libra the scales October 14 November 23 Scorpio the scorpion November 23 November 29 Ophiuchus the serpent-bearer November 29 December 17 Sagittarius the archer December 17 January 20 If you have more questions feel free to ask one of our excellent astronomy tutors.

Parent-teacher communication How to encourage engagement at your school

Parent-teacher communication How to encourage engagement at your school A well-established parent-teacher relationship can benefit students greatly, but the development of a relationship depends on several things, namely the teacher’s outreach, a parent’s interest, and the school’s overall culture of communication. The type of things that a teacher communicates to a parent matters as well. If teachers share their students’ successes with the parents, it can provide parents with confidence and direction on how to get involved in their child’s learning process. But if teachers consistently reach out to parents only to share bad news (about their child’s grades or classroom behavior) and neglect to share any positive feedback, this can discourage any parental involvement because it may instill feelings of helplessness or even a distaste for the teaching style. But when a parent does feel empowered to get involved, there is a significant amount of evidence to show that their involvement benefits students by improving their academic achievement, improving classroom behavior, better motivating students to learn, and instilling a more positive attitude about school and studies. But teachers can benefit from the relationship as well. Parents who are involved in their child’s learning and have come to know their child’s teacher through regular communication tend to have a more positive view of teachers, and this in turn can boost teachers’ confidence and classroom morale. What, as principals and school administrators, can you do to encourage the relationship? Read below for some tips. Focus on communication in all its forms This includes telephone calls, open houses, curriculum nights, and all are very effective forms of communication.Teachers can do their own individual outreach to their students’ families, and this is often more personal than general communications anyway. Unfortunately, as families evolve and parents’ schedules change, events like open houses may not be as plausible for some families. Encourage teachers to diversify their communication methods and include some of the following: Initial contact letter: Sending home a letter at the beginning of each school year to students’ families is a great way for a teacher to introduce themselves as their child’s teacher and to begin to open a communication path between the teacher and parents. Good news report: As mentioned above, when teachers regularly communicate positive feedback to parents, it gives them an opportunity to garner insight in a teacher’s classroom, and it establishes a realm of trust should problems arise later. Aside from individual teacher communication, there are other school-wide forms of communication that could integrate parents into the learning process including: parent newsletters School calendars that outline events for parents in advance Field days and school events Parent workshops School website In an international school, language barriers can be a common challenge. Being sure to address these barriers in a sensitive manner is important. Some tips include: Speak slowly (but not condescendingly) and clearly Avoid idioms, jargon, or culturally specific sayings Choose the most effective medium of communication given the language barriers Check for understanding As the second semester unfolds, it’s a great idea to think about your school engagement policy and how you plan to engage teachers and parents in communication. More than general information about the school, parents want to know about what is going on in their child’s classroom. This year, take as many opportunities to share this information with parents to develop effective partnerships.
